Millwrights

Millwrights are construction mechanics who install and maintain conveyance systems and large machinery for factories and shops.

 

Millwrights install conveyor systems, escalators, giant electrical turbines and generators. Millwrights install and do maintenance on machinery in factories, and do much of the precision work in nuclear power plants. Millwrights are skilled construction mechanics who study and interpret blueprints, and then put their knowledge and expertise to work drilling, welding, bolting and doing whatever else is necessary to assure that the cogs of industry are put in perfect working order.

Working conditions

Although millwrights work indoor much of the time on installation and maintenance work. Their duties also involve working on the outside of buildings and other structures, in situations often requiring the use of scaffolding. Quite often millwrights are required to work split shifts, overtime and to travel long distance for work. There isn’t any travel allowance. Millwrights work with a variety hand and portable power tools, and frequently cut, join and fasten construction materials using welding equipment and oxy-acetylene torches. 

General qualifications
  • Age – minimum age is 18.
  • Education – high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Good physical condition – must be able to perform the work of the trade.
Admission requirements
  • Birth certificate or other proof of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Transcript (high school).
  • Physical examination given by applicant’s own physician.
  • Personal interview.
  • General aptitude test.
Terms of apprenticeship training
  • Length of program – 4 years.
  • Related training – minimum of 160 hours of annual classroom instruction.
  • Degree program (college classes required also).
Recommended high school courses
  • Advanced mathematics.
  • Algebra 1.
  • Trigonometry.
  • Geometry.
  • Mechanical drawing.

How do I enroll?

First, you need to complete an application by applying online or applying at one of our training facilities. Applicants are required to meet the following entry-level requirements:

  • 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma (formerly GED).
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Pass a drug screen.

Once you have completed your application, you will be contacted at a later date for testing and an interview.
